Dear Sir,

I have seen Ferry since my return home. He talks strangely. In talking with my friends after I left him, I find his is at the bottom of such opposition as I may have, and thus also insist that Ferry is not at heart for you. This is a good deal confirmed by the conversation I had with him, but yet I am unwilling to yet believe it to be so. I will give you further details soon.

Ferry will write to you probably in answer to your letter. He will attempt to make you believe that I am not to succeed. I wish you to pay no attention to this, for I tell you that I shall. But I wish you to reply to him asking to go for me in case he is a friend to you. For I doubt you can find a better friend to you in the state than I am, & I think I can do you better service

than any man will, that is brought in at the 11th hour over my head. May I rely on you to put Ferry right at all hazzards. I know of no other person but you to do it. In as much as he has been supposed to be your friend it looks bad to see him fighting me who has always been considered your earnest supporter in the north, it will create a terrible jar & may prejudice your case.

Please act promptly & firmly

Address Ferry at Waukegan will again soon

Yours Truly
