Dear Sir,
It seems that Ferry is really at the bottom of my opposition. He, himself, is not formidable. It appears that some time ago he started a story that I was not true to the Republican party at Springfield last Session. After toiling as hard as I did through the session, & after bearing the name for Six years of being the "blackest Republican" in the house, I feel that I cannot allow this Slander to go unnoticed; Indeed it will not answer. Evry one, but those who are looking for unnecessary course know better, but I am requested to get a letter from you on the Subject which will remove the last Straw of the opposition.
I send you such a letter as I am authorized to send by Orville Slusser of Lake Co. also a Suggestion for your answer, which I believe contains nothing but the facts & I think you
you know the facts pretty well as I constantly relied on you for counsel.
Please return the answer back to me as soon as you can. It is not desired for publication, but to show to certain persons. You can change it to suit you if not now in proper form.
Ferry leaves tomorrow night, I understand for Tenn. My friends insist that he cannot hurt me, but they wish to check the influence of his Story.
Evrything looks well.
Yours Respectfully
E M Haines
Gov Yates
Please do not forget to mail your answer to Mr Slussers letter to me at Waukegan
