OFFICE OF THE
WOODSTOCK SENTINEL JOB PRINTING ESTABLISHMENT,
In P.O. Building, South-East Corner Public Square.
Woodstock, Ill., August 22 1864
ABRAHAM E. SMITH,
Editor and Proprietor.
Gov. Yates:
Dear Sir:
Our County Convention was held on Saturday last. The same feeling was manifest there, as is felt by the people all over McHenry county, most decidedly in favor of your election to the U.S. Senate. All of your friends, including [T?] J [Stamfield?]. Co. Treasurer, Cor Lansing, State Senator, and myself supported M. L. Joslyn for Representative, he having openly and repeatedly pledged himself for you. He was nominated with that distinct understanding.
I see that Gen Oglesby is to be here on the 31st. The people would be very much pleased to see you here at the same time.
This letter will be presented you by my brother, the Adjutant of the 124th Illinois Infantry, in which capacity he passed though all the [illegible] battles of the past two years. I trust he will convince you that he is worthy the promotion he seeks. And election would be a source of gratification to McHenry county , and especially to Your true friend
Abraham E. Smith
Write him that I hope & believe that his brother will be able when he gets to his Regt so to arrange matters that I can appoint him which most happy to do if I can consistently with the rules & justice to officers
Gov Yates
I am well acquainted with Wm E Smith of this place adjutant of the 124 Reg & know him to be a gentleman & well qualified to fill the office of Maj of said Reg. I would consider his appointment a very particular personal favor to me
Yours &c
W L Joslyn
