United States Internal Revenue Division, 13th District, Illinois
Tamaroa Perry Co. Ill 1864 Aug 23
Gov. Richd Yates Dear Sir
Your favor of 18th inst. recd - In answer I enclose herein a few names of reliable Union men in this Co. - the list can be extended as desired I send only one or two names from each precinct in the Co. - the post office address does not always indicate precinct residence & in one instance "Coulterville" it is in another County - "Henry Clay" of this place is Union Candidate for Legislature in this District (composed of Randolph Monroe & Perry Co.) the District elect two - the other Union Candidate is Watt of Chester, Randolph Co. - Perry Co. will give from 499- to 500 majority for the Whole Ticket - National State & County - unless some dissensions arise among Union men - We hope to be firmly & harmoniously united - if so and
a reasonable number of our Union soldiers now in the field can be at home at election we can poll 500 majority - Our calculation now is that in this Representative District we can elect our two Candidates by less than 100 majority - it will be a close race - Work is needed in Randolph & Monroe Counties - none in this from the outside at present. Some little local feeling alone here needs gentle suasion only among ourselves - I shall take pleasure in answering your hail! at any time to the best of any opportunity - with best wishes, as ever, Your Friend Truly L. S. Norton
