Gov Yates

My Dear Friend

Your Favor is Recd. Genl A. C. Harding is our Candidate for Congress and will be elected by a Small majority, And in case Grant Captures Richmond before Election will be elected by 1500 or 2000 majority

James Strain a Lawyr of this City is Candidate for State Senate and will be Elected by 1000 majority. James H. Martin a Farmer residing near this place is Candidate for Legislature and will be Elected by 450 majority.

Warren County will give 400 majority on State Ticket under any circumstances.

Strain & Martin are both favorable to Electing you to U.S. Senate and I Shall consider it my especial Duty to See that they continue in that opinion And when the adjoining District Composed of Henderson & Mercer Counties make their nomination for the Legislature I shall pay him a visit and See that he is all right for you for Senator.

I think it would be greatly to your interest to come & make a Speech here During the Campaign. Arrangmts for which you could make through Genl Harding. There have been Stories afloat that Gov Yates is a Drunkard and your personal appearance here would Satisfy both Candidates and people that you are all right.

I strongly advise you to come as it would afford our State Senate & Representative an opportunity to make your acquaintance.

Dear Governor. I have a personal obligation to Discharge to you And my Heart is full to overflowing therein.

My only Boy wounded upon the Field of Battle in common with other Illinois Braves received your Care As Governor of our noble State And when I found him wounded in an Illinois Hospital he Said "See what good care Gov Yates takes of us Boys" And when he was Dying a few nights thereafter he Said "I am proud that I shall be of "the Illinois Slain".

A Cripple myself I am to live and alway feel myself Disgraced by not going to the [illegible] [defence?] of my country in this her time of trouble.

Enclosed please find a List of proper persons to Addres on any subject Connected with the Glorious Union Cause.

Please write me in all confidence on any Matter
