Gr. Secretary's Address GEO. H. HARLOW, P.O. Box 500, Springfield, Ills

In communicating with Gr. Secretary, please give Name, No. and P.O. address of your Council.

Union League of America OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF THE ILLINOIS GRAND COUNCIL

Pekin Oct 23rd, 1864

Governor Richard Yates

Sir:

The Union men of this county (Tazewell) are doing all in their power to carry it for the Union this fall; but I must confess if we do not have help the results are very doubtful. You doubtless know that if we lose this county, we lose a member of Legislature. Also a member of the State Senate and the member of Congress from the 8th Dist. If our Soldiers were home there would be no doubt of the result, but as it is I am fearful. The Copperheads have plenty of money and are using it lavishly. The county Union Centive Committee are cramped for funds although our local candidates are liberal and give

all and more than they are able. If we can get the Soldiers home we send you will be safe result from the apparent apathy that seems to exist in this matter. I again say I fear the result. I told O. M. Hatch a few months ago that Tazewell would give 250 majority for the Union but that assertion was based on the belief that our Soldiers would be home. We want part at least of the 8th, 47th, 73rd, 86th, 115th, 108th, 139th, & 146th and maybe some others that you know are from this county or District. It is of fearful importance that our brave boys should be allowed to vote. Essentially in all doubtful counties and Districts and I trust you will leave no effort spared to bring it about. Respectfully Yours Geo. H. Harlow

Harlow, George Pekin Oct 23rd 64 There is an alarming doubt of the result in that county. If they lose it, they lose members of the Senate from 8th Dist. He thinks that the result is very doubtful unless they have the Soldiers vote. They want at least part of the 8th, 47th, 73rd, 86th, 115th, 108th, 139th & 146th Regts. Without these he fears that the county is lost. Ansd Oct 26 64 Snyder ADC
