Springfield. Dear Sir.

Your favour of the 22d together with the speeches came duly to hand & the latter have been distributed throughout the County.

I hand you a slip from the Gazette of the 26th, New Editor of which is as much your friend as I am, although his Press is owned chiefly by Washburne & his friends: The Article was written by Father Houghten the former Editor /who is after an office/ and the proof was corrected by Washburne himself: I trust there will be no trouble about your reelection, although it seems to me that Logan, if on the track, will be a foeman worthy of your steel: As to Washburne he is the epitome of selfishness & has fewer friends than any man in America; US Marshall Jones is working for him as I am told: Jones is my friend and a good fellow and I cannot say anything against him, but Jones wishes a renewal of his Lease on the U.S.M.s Office & Washburne will get it for him if any man can, provided he is elected Senator. My impression is that he stands a better chance of being struck by lightning.

Logan may give you some trouble. Jones is working for Washburn and expects him to give him some appt. when he is elected. of which he stands about as much chance as he does of being struck by Lightning.
