Belleville Dec. 1. 1864
Dear Governor
I have just learned that Brigadier General White has resigned. This will give a vacancy for Illinois, and it would seem to me just and would afford me great pleasure if Col. Engleman could get the place.
I have mentioned his claims to the President but your recommendation just at this time would be of very great weight. [Morey?] has been mustered out, and is an applicant for the Belleville Post Office, otherwise I would have urged his claims.
The President is in first rate spirits. His cabinet needs rejuvenation. There are too many old fogies in it. Chase ought to be chief Justice. A district Judgeship is just the thing for Usher. As a member of the Cabinet he is too small a man.
I think (in fact I Know) that our members are all right as to Senator. Old St. Clair has saved a Senator, and a member of Congress. We had to do the whole work, doubled our majority of 1860 and want it a hundred better.
I am most Sincerely Yours
G Koerner
