State of California - Executive Department
Sacramento, Dec 6, 1864
Governor,
In the newspapers a few days since I noticed an item, of which the enclosed is a copy. Mr. Creed is a brother of my wife. He enlisted in 1861 when about 20 years of age in one of the Ohio regiments and when his time expired re-enlisted in the 23d Illinois Veterans. We have heard very little from him during his time of service, but we learn from others that he has
done his duty faithfully. He has no one to take any interest in his welfare that would be likely to see you or from whom you would hear. My object in writing you is to ask you to inquire into his conduct, and if it has been as creditable as has been represented, that you will give him a commission.
With great respect
I am forever
your obt servant

His Excellency The Governor of Illinois
George G. Moore Company D 11th West Virginia and John Creed Co D 23d Illinois Veterans presented to Secretary Stanton two battle flags captured by them from the enemy at Fishers Hill. Stanton in receiving them thanked the men on behalf of the Department for their gallantry and directed them to proceed to the Adjutant Generals Office where suitable medals would be prepared for them. Private Creed captured his flag in a novel manner. While the battle was progressing he got out of ammunition and being close to a rebel
color-bearer picked up a stone, with which he knocked the rebel down and captured his flag. The above is an extract from the Washington correspondence of the Cincinnati papers.
