Freeport Dec 17th 1864.
He has received Governors letter. Had hoped no other candidate would be proposed and that none of the gentlemen proposed would consent to become candidates against the Governor. No friends say a majority of members are opposed to Governor but not united on any man. If Governor cannot be successful then we would prefer Washborne, yet he hopes to see you elected, &c &c &c.
