Ottawa Dec 24th 1864
Dear Gov.
I arrived home last night. I am convinced you cannot be beaten. Yet they are moving Heaven & Earth to that end & all regardless of principle truth honor & everything Else. Strain has played the day is now non-committal. Wants something & afraid same with Lansing. Wants Bank position So far they have used money "twill use it" in greater amounts next week.
Poor Sedgwick would make a good weather [ever?]. d-n Such men I fear there is more of them in our camp. Have done all I can do this Side of Springfield - Should be there Early next week if possible. If you think of anything telegraph me. Your friends are at work - dont be alarmed
