Office of the Waukegan Weekly Gazette,
James Y Cory, Editor and Prop'r.
Waukegan, Ill. Dec 28th 1864
Gov. Yates -
My Dear Sir: -
I enclose you herewith a circular from your friend (?) E. M. Haines, handed Me by C. M. Upton Esq of this place who procured it in Chicago. From him I learn that your friends there are much exercised about it. It is undoubtedly a creature of the Tribune office.
I shall continue to do all in my power for you in the way of influencing our Members to vote right. So far as I am able to do so, by obtaining the influence of our leading citizens to bear
on his action in your behalf, and by personal Efforts with him, I think I Shall be able to succeed unless the position you may have given Mr Haines heretofore, shall counteract my Efforts.
If I can be of any assistance to you, or the cause, by going to Springfield, I shall most cheerfully do so. of which fact you can judge better than I am able to do.
I have from friend Upton that Mr Washburn was in Chicago on Saturday last, which may account for the article in the Tribune of Monday & the Circular Enclosed.
Sincerely your friend
Jas. Y. Cory
