Chicago Dec 29 64
Dear Govr
I am sorry to inform you that I have been confined to my room for past two weeks and in consequence I shall not be able to visit Springfield as I expected - Of course I hear occasionally of the efforts of the Chicago Tribune and its cohorts in infamy - I know too, that an effort has been made to convince Senator Ward, that you was instrumental in forcing that combination of infamy upon us for congress and thereby through the Chicago Tribune compelled Ward to withdraw - If you had any part in so foul a work you ought to be beaten.
I have always denied it and don't now believe it - Now allow me to say a word and if it don't suit you pay no attention to it. First I Know there is no crime that the leaders to your opposition would not commit - This plan will be to get you & your friends committed to a caucus nomination, and there by all sorts of fraud & falsehood defeat you in caucus - They will if there should happen to be one member who was Ever jealous of his wife, or who may be narrow behind the Ears try to convince him that you love roomers tc tc - now don't be trapped or beatun - I believe the Democrats would all go for you in preference to the Chicago Tribune or any of its pimps
Yours Truly
