Canton Dec 29/64
Hon R. Yates
Governor of Ill.
Sir. I had thought of being at Springfield at the opening of the legislature to aid in turning the elements the right way for the Senatorial question; but in consequence of poor health shall not be able. In case of a hard struggle I would suggest that Hon John P. Brooks is a friend of yours and having a heavy influence in his party, could lead many of them to vote right. I have heard him express himself unqualifiedly in presence of numerous democrats---in your favor for the Senate over every other man in Ill. I would suggest as he is soon to be out of employ if you would interest yourself to secure him a Clerk Ship in the Education Comm or Some other, that easily the whole wait of his influence would be turned in your favor. He knows nothing of what I now write.
At times I have feared your race might be a close one, but I have Confidence you will succeed.
Yours Sincerly
M. L. Haney.

Poor health will prevent him coming to Springfield. Think Hon Jno. P. Brooks might be secured to use his influence in your favor with Democrates as he is a great friend of yours
