Hon Richd Yates
Dear Sir
Lt Col Smith returned to Cairo this AM and informed me fully of the Conference with Yourself and I trust it will be allowable at all events excusable in me to express to yourself my gratification at finding First that I have not been mistaken in my Estimate of Yourself & secondly that I myself have been fully understood by Your Excellency. Nothing affords me so much pleasure in my intercourse with Gentlemen as to find that I am always met half way upon the basis of candor & truth. It was the conviction that I could confide in Your Excellency that induced me to write to you as I did plainly candidly & without Coloring.
I called upon Genl [Grant?] today & delivered your letter and he at once informed me that as soon as I desired them he would give me marching orders. I shall probably get off on Monday or early next week. I desire that Your Excellency will if deemed proper furnish me with such instructions or Counsel as will from time to time enable me to effect the greatest good to the cause in which we are all engaged & involved. You may feel assured that I shall attempt to do whatever tends to promote the Common weal & interests of Illinois.
When I left Springfield it was intended that you would probably be appointed a major General I freely Confess a desire (waiving all political considerations) to go under You in preference to any other man in this State. In case any Steps are requisite in order to that end, I shall feel obliged by such information as will enable me to cooperate in that direction in trusting hear from you at Shawneetown. I remain with high regard truly I N Haynie
