Description
A side view shows Illinois State Police officers loading a truck behind a building with material confiscated from a business accused of running illegal gambling operations. Beginning in the early 1950s, newly elected Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson II, 1949-1953, began a campaign to crack down on corruption and illegal gambling located in businesses across the state. He ordered Illinois State Police officials to raid businesses suspected of running gambling operations, and the confiscation of devices and machines used in the illegal activities. Controversy arose because the raids never reached the most prestigious private clubs, yet in 1960, private residences were included.
