Description
Three members of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) pose for a photograph sitting on a desk in uniform. WAVES was a program created in August 1942 to fill a void for additional Navy volunteers that existed during the Second World War. Although the women were prevented from serving in combat situations, including on warships and aircraft, they played a crucial role for the Navy on the American homeland and overseas following the conclusion of the war. More than 8,000 WAVES served in the Navy, with many more having enlisted throughout the war.
