Shelbyville Ill April 19 1862
His Excellency
Gov. Yates:
Dear Friend:
At a large and respectable meeting of the Union men, (primarily Republicans) of this Town, on last night, I was appointed a committee of one to confer with you, Mr. Butler, Mr. Hatch & Mr. Dubois, and ascertain if there was going to be any concert of action in opposition to the new Constitution lately adopted at Springfield Ill.
Or are we to lie dormant & allow it to go by default-
Please inform us, that we
may act understandingly I presume it is not necessary that I should write to the other gentlemen upon the subject, as I can learn all that is sufficient from you.
We meet again next Friday, to take into consideration what action will be necessary for us to take. In the meantime we hope to hear from you.
Truly your Friend, Chas E Woodward
