Col. J. D. Webster
My dear Sir
I was most happy upon my return home to find your letter, briefly stating the gallant bearing of our brave Illinoians, and especially of the First Regiment of Illinois Artillery commanded by you. You must allow me to say that the progress of the war only confirms me in the choice made by me of yourself as the Colonel of the Regiment. To say that your services thus far have been invaluable and that you are regarded as the most accomplished and effective officer in our ranks in not the
language of adulation but (in my estimation and in that of a large number of your fellow citizens) of sober truth. I shall not fail when I get to Washington to impress this important truth upon Mr. Lincoln and to secure if possible adequate and eminent promotion for you
Your report as to Col. Adams is also a source of the greatest pleasure to me, for in his promotion to the Lieut Colonelcy, I encountered much opposition and prejudice, I rejoice on his account and my own, and above all on account of his wife, whom I regard as one of the loveliest of her sex - and who has a lively interest in the success of her husband.
With sentiments of
high consideration
I have the honor to be
Your Obt. Servt.
