Kankakee City, Ill., Aug. 18, 1862.
Hon. O. Lovejoy:
Dear Sir -- Old Iroquois has furnished over 1300 men for this war, and we have not one field officer. We protest that this is not fair treatment. Chicago, Springfield, Jacksonville, Quincy, &c., have no reasonable right to officer all our regiments the country will be heard from. I am now out of business and would like to have a field office in one of the regiments forming at Kankakee, or some military position elsewhere. You know my standing in Old Iroquois, and anything you can do for me with Gov. Yates will most certainly be duly appreciated and remembered. I have sacraficed much, worked hard, and spent a great deal for the war, & think my claims are entitled to due consideration. Let me hear from you.
Yours truly,
C. F. McNeill

Wants a post as Field Officer in Regt. at Kankakee & Iroquois; recommended by Owen Lovejoy.
Dear Gov.
I think Iroquois should have an officer & I know of no one who would be better than McNeill; I should feel personally gratified by said appointment.

O. Lovejoy.
