Post Office Cairo Ill

Sept. 9-1862

Dear Gov

Yours of late date was duly received. I will come to Springfield at the opening of the Legislature if it is so that I can leave but how that will be I can not tell. The business of the P.O. requires my personal attention and I can scarcely be absent from the office one hour but some hound will report me for negligence of business. If you visit Cairo any time soon let me know when you are coming a few days before and will arrange so that we have a meeting of some our leading friends at the St Charles Hotel. I like the way things are working in the east. I am glad Halleck is exposing opperations in the Campaign of the rationing. I am not sure but his object is a personal one but it will be for the good of the Country to have those opperations exposed. McClellan is a deaf President, and Halleck cant win. Popes letter is the entering wedg that will open the way to make Banks Commander in Chief.

I am in hopes the President will learn that he can best rely on those friends with whom he has eaten a peck of salt. The men who will close this war sucessfuly are men whose hearts are in the work regardless of West Point. McClean and his friend have been watching the Whitehouse with a more jealous eye than they have Richmond The result is they have lost both. I think the Miss. will soon be open. Something that ought to have been long since.

I hope the future may be as prosperous as we desire to the arms of our Union

I am truly your friend

D.S. Linegar
