Pinckneyville Ill
12th Sept. 1862
His Excellency Governor Yates,
Sir
When I had the honor of waiting on you at Springfield on the 14th Ultimo and presenting testimonials of moral character and professional Standing, I was told it might be some months before my turn for examination would come. Not wishing to be so long unemployed, and hearing that surgeons were needed in Some places, I went to St Louis as being most convenient, and least expensive, and obtained there a certificate of qualification, which I inclose to Your Excellency.
I would for many reasons prefer being amongst our own troops either in the Volunteers or Militia, and I hope your Excellency will see fit to give me an appointment in either, or as Medical Examiner for this or any other County
I have been practising Medicine for upwards of twenty years, and I think from my practical experience I could be useful to the brave men who are fighting for our existence, and would feel great pleasure in being so.
I have the honor to be
Your Excellency's Most Obedt. Servt.
Robert Whitley.
Robert Whitley M.D.
Pinkneysville Sept 12th. 62.
Says since his interview with Gov. he obtained Certificate of the St Louis Medl. Board and now wants a position as surgeon in the army.
