My dear Father & Brothers

I am very busy with Lizzy packing up for a start towards Chicago, and therefore have but a few moments to spare. You will perceive by the enclosed that my last night was honored by a complimentary. I received a Telegraph from Crisp yesterday wishing me to open in Memphis on the 12th of April. Answered that I could not decide till I reached Chicago and received my letters from other places. I think it will be too late in the season for me to go there, and furthermore I have a prospect of playing

in Philadelphia in June and must try to get towards home for other summer and spring arrangements. Kimball wrote to me the other day saying that his time was so arranged that it would be uncertain for him to hold out inducement &c. I understand that the Howard is not doing a great business thus far. What is Thorne doing about the National? Write me all the news. By the way---tell John that the Music of Massaneillo is very imperfect---so much so that we could not do the piece. The Leader here who is a

fine musician, says the parts are many of them unfinished, and some parts lacking entirely. There is no vocal score &c &c. Only 9 parts in all were sent. Ask John to see about it and ascertain the facts. I can do nothing with the play till the deficiency is made right. Write soon.
