Head Quarter 81st R.I.V.
Camp Lake Providence La
Feb 27th 1863
Hon Richard Yates
Governor State Ills
Dr Sir
In consequence of having become badly ruptured, I fear that I shall not be able much longer to endure active service in the field. I still fele desirous of remaining in the service if there is any place I can fill, doing justice to my country, and myself credit.
Among the recent Acts of Congress I notice the Conscript Law makes provisions for one Officer in each Congressional District with the rank of Capt.
If your Honor will confer upon me that appointment in the 9th District you will place me under lasting obligation. My inclination would be to hold the Honorable position I now fill and look forward promotion but duty teaches me that it would be better to file a subordinate officer with credit, than a higher one to the detriment of the service
Respectfully
H Campbell

Fears he will have to leave the service on account of ruptures, Wishes the Governor to appoint him Provost Marshall of the 9th District
