Office Chief Quartermaster
Army of the Frontier
Springfield Mo: 27th Feb 1863
His Excellency
Richard Yates
Governor of Illinois
Governor
Yours asking a discharge or Furlough for Edward Shields teamster in Govt Supply train under my direction is at hand
In reply I have to say that the man Shields must have made an untrue Statement to you or to his Sister as he is perfectly well & has been so for some time
I would take pleasure however in complying with your request but for the fact that he is confinement & awaiting his trial before a military
commission for assault with intent to kill upon the person of a fellow teamster some weeks ago. It seems that in a quarrel he struck the man in the head with a club, injuring him so badly as to cause much doubt of his recovery
Upon enquiry I find that Shields is considered a somewhat desparate & dangerous man
As you take some interest in him I shall endeavor to see that he has a chance to defend himself at the trial & if you desire it, if he is acquitted I will allow him to quit the service
I have the honor to be
Governor Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
