March 14, 1861.
My Dear Sir:
I have just had the pleasure of perusing your inaugural message, and I cannot, in justice to my own feelings, omit to congratulate you, first, on your accession to the Gubernatorial chair of Illinois, and secondly, on the happy manner of your first communication to the legislature.
We have been in public life together, generally opposed, but I do not see how I could now very much separate myself from your platform, were I at home, especial-
ly in all that concerns the abominable heresy of secession, and the preservation of the American Union.
I sincerely trust that your Administration may, in all respects, be as successful as your friends can wish. In this far off portion of the world, in the midst of the great Pacific, the congratulations of your friends will meet with one response at least.
Very truly yours
D. L. Gregg
