Richard Yates,

Governor of Illinois,

Sir,

I beg respectfully to state that I have been for the last year in the service of Government in the Ordnance Department & that I am anxious to go into more active service than what is offered me here. If you think proper to grant me a commission I shall prove myself grateful I know, worthy I hope.

I can refer you to many General officers, Colonels, &c but the fact of my having been in my present position of chief clerk for over a year will I hope be sufficient recommendation.

Hoping this intrusion will be excused
