Albany, Illinois.

April 22. 1861.

His Excellency Richard Yates.

Governor of Illinois;

Honored Sir; Our Countryneeds not only soldiers - not only man's power - but also God's favor. This favor He grants in answer to prayer. Every regiment there should have a chaplain. I am a Presbyterian Minister, and am willing to volunteer as the Chaplain of any regiment from this state for the on-coming war.

I take pleasure in referring you to the Hon John H. Addams, Senator from Stephenson County, Dr. A W King from the same county. Rev Dr Rice of Chicago, Rev Dr Candee of Galesburg, Hon E. B. Washburne of Galena. Hon M P. Sweet & Hon T. J. Turner of Freeport, all of whom will speak favorably of my character & qualifications. If I can be of any use to you & to our beloved country in this hour of need, I beg you to inform me.

Yours Respectfully
