Jacksonville, April 21st, 1861.
Hon. Richard Yates.
Gov. Illinois, Springfield, Ills.
Dr. Sir:- My son Thomas H., with whom you are acquainted, has written me several urgent letters, desiring that I would ask you for some active employment, during these stirring times, which is the reason of my now troubling you, as much as I dislike troubling you. He is in his nineteenth year, larger than I am, active and intelligent, a good scholar and writes a good hand, and has the war fever bad, he says. He is doing nothing of importance - nor indeed am I,) and is anxious to obtain employment. Anything you may do for him, will be duly appreciated His address, at present is "Bement, Ills"
Hurrah, for Illinois! Her sons are true to the glorious old Union. Had I not been too old, I would have, too, been in the ranks. But there is no chance for me, so I will encourage others.
Your recommendation of a State Guard, is excellent. Gov. Yates and Gov. Curtin, will be rewarded in the future.
Yours very Truly
