A few days ago I wrote you a letter which was signed by several others requesting your influence in favor of the discharge from Military service of Edwin S. Cushman of Co E 9th Reg Ill Vol.

We sent that to Hon E B Washburne for endorsement expecting he would return the letter here & Mr. Cushman intended to take it to you in person---but Mr Washburn having forwarded the letter to you he will not go to Springfield but trusts that you will

forward it and do what you can to aid us in this work of necessity & mercy.
