Hon Richd Yates

Governor Ill.

Sir:

I have your favor of

15th inst. in relation to the regiment which

has been authorized to be raised in the State,

for State Service. As you have already

been telegraphed to, by some of our citizens,

asking that a place be reserved in this

regiment for the Company now forming

in Lake County, I write, at your request,

concerning the number of men that can

be relied upon from here and would

say that you may implicitly rely upon

a full company from this County,

and would urge that inasmuch as

this Company will be full this week

that you give us some assurance of

its certainty of being accepted. Please

enter our company and you shall

not be disappointed in gitting it as

promised. In the company will be

a number of Veterans, Noble fellows

who have already served their three

years.

Now Governor, we are in earnest

about this, our Company is being raised

by an officer., Lieut Reid, of the old

15th Ill who is pushing the matter

right along, and we can't afford

to go through all the ceremonies, get

our men to Camp Butler and there find

out, perhaps that there is no plan

for us. What we want is to know

that we have the place secure,

then there will be something to aim

at & we can get on [better?]. But

so long as there is an uncertainty about

it is difficult to keep up the steam.

Just telegraph me positively that

our company has been accepted & you

will not wait many days ere you will

find Little Lake on hand with [her?]

full company.

Respectfully

James Y Cory

Telegraph "I answer by mail" &

with following

Answer

I cannot

telegraph you

positively because

I am asked to

do so by enough

men to fill

three Regts, but

I think you are

farther advanced

than any Co. I

know of and

I think you

are very sure

of being rec'd -

If I were to pursue the

course you

require of

there would

be more than

enough Cos

offered to cut

you out -

I sincerely

hope your

company

will be one

of the ten

and I think

there is not

much doubt

of this
