Hon Richard Yates

Governor State Illinois

Sir,

I have the honor to thank you for Your Communication of the 16th expressing your Readiness to give Me the appointment of Chaplain of Colored Troops had you the power, which is Vested in the Secretary of War on the Recommendation of the Examining Board. May I beg, very respectfully & earnestly, that you give me the required order to appear before this Board as I am most anxious to be a chaplain of Col Troops. My only plea for thus troubling you is My own [Audacity?] in the

first place & a conviction that you will do all in your power to help a Young Man who is Anxious to help himself. Please excuse this unofficial style of addressing you as I am in Camp & must Submit to Circumstances. hoping you May be our Next Governor & if not that something better.

I remain Very respectfully Your obed Servant
