Gov, of Illinois

After mature reflection and being advised and Strongly urged by my friends I have concluded to drop you this line to Say to you that if considered worthy and there is any chance for a Capt's or Lieut Commission it would be thankfully received as I have a family and nothing but my Labour to support them. My age is near fourty and for reference to military ability or Soldiery bearing apply to Lt Col A.L. Fahnestock or any officer in the Regt or the Late Col D. W. Magee Peoria My Opinions and feelings in regard to this war have undergone no charge since My Letter in the Peoria Transcript. Only Genl G.B. McClellan
who I believed to be a Loyal man has accepted the Nomination from that Convention of Traitors at Chicago So I am done with him.
I remain most respectfully Your Obedient Servant
