Richard Yates
Governor of State of Illinois
I had hoped through the kindness you done me in writing to Gen. Allen I should be stationed at Mattoon, but by some means, I was disappointed. Indeed it has been my misfortune since I have been in the service, to be placed among strangers. I was assigned to duty at this Post, but I was not willing to serve in a subordinate capacity under a Cheif Q. M. of the Mo. Militia who is not even a bonded Officer and holds no rank in the Q. M. Department.
I do not want to leave the service just now, but would like to be in Illinois or if not there, at some respectable Post some where else. You are of course
acquainted with Col. Myers & Genl Rosencrans. Will you do me the favor to write them in my favor, for both are strangers to me, They do not know whether I am a man of character, and standing, at home or whether a mere adventurer who has got the position as a political reward.
This state will go for Lincoln and so must Illinois go. The Salvation of the country depends at this time, upon the Election of Mr. Lincoln.
I am relieved from duty here and shall report to Col Myers the 20th. So you will greatly oblige me by writing as soon as your convenience will permit. With many thanks Governor, for the many personal favors you have shown me, and the bold and patriotic manner in which you have upheld the state of our adoption. I am Your
Sincere friend & humble Servant
