Gov. Yates,
With confidence I write you a note in regard to my case which I will briefly state to you I am a private soldier Before going to Co G 27th Ills Vol Infty and have been a good soldier So far as health would permit and my health has been good most of the time until Septr 1863 when I was troubled with Diarrhea (almost chronic) when we made the move to take Chattanooga when I refused to stay Back in the rear where I should have stayed until I was recruited But I marched with my command (50) miles south of Chattanooga to Alpine Valley where we lay 2 Days. & from thence we joined the army and fought The Battle of Chickamauga I fought on the 19th But on the 20th I would not go in for it was Impossible for me to go at all. & on account of a mallice which existed Between me and my Lieut I was courtmarshaled for cowardice in the face of the enemy and sentenced to six months Pay which will Be Deducted from
me unless you speak in my Behalf I am and always tryed to be an honorable upright man I have a mother and an orphan Sister and Brother who looks to me for assistance
I ask you as a man of good feeling for man to Reestablish my pay for I have Dearly earned it I will be mustered out monday or tuesday next Be Kind enough to give me an answer By all means and oblige your most obt servt

Say that he did not go into the Battle of Chickamauga the 2d day on account of sickness---and his Lieut had him court-martialed for cowardice and they sentenced him to have six months pay deducted. He wants sentence revoked.
