Illinois State Agency
Nashville Tenn Sept 27th 1864
Hon
Richard Yates
Governor
Dr Sir
Dr Merrick surgeon in charge of the transportation of sick & wounded from the front to Louisville, has just called on me to know what is being done toward getting our men home before 4th Nov. He says Gov Morton has succeeded in procuring an order from the secretary of War for all Indiana troops unfit for service to be sent home, and the Indiana Agents are urging him to secure transportation; but he will do nothing about it untill he hears from you. The Doctor says "he is very anxious to beat his old Neighbors the Copperhead candidate for Govenor & carry the State for Lincoln."
If I can be of any service in the
way of getting our boys home I will cheerfuly remain & do all I can, - if not my own affairs require personal attention in Illinois early in October.
Very Respy
