To his Excellency

Richd Yates

Governor State of Illinois

Sir.

Some two weeks since, I sent you a communication requesting the appointment of Adjutant of the 146th Regt Ill. Vols. having been requested so to do by many of the Company officers of that Regiment. Immediately after, I wrote Hon E. B. Washburne M. C. Third Dist. Ills. (as did also C. K. Judson, & others of Freeport.) asking him to obtain an order from the War Dept. for my discharge from three years service to receive promotion in this Regiment. He informs me that the War Dept. gave him the assurance that the order would be issued upon your request. (The letter is now in hands of Adjt Genl Fuller) and being the choice of the Colonel of

that Regiment, I would respectfully and earnestly request that the necessary application be made to the War Department, and that I be appointed Adjutant of said Regiment. Hoping this will meet your earliest attention

I have the honor Sir to be

Very Respectfully

Your obdt Servt

James P. Hodges.
