Hon. Richd. Yates
Sir, I take pleasure in commending to you one of my old friends---George Goldsmith, who served three years & a month in the 14th Regt. Ill. Vol. Inft. and who would still be in the service but for partial deafness occasioned principally by the cannonade at Shiloh.
He is a grandson of your old acquaintance & friend Rev. John C. Hamilton of this place, and as he has a brother & many friends in the army he desires to go there where he thinks he can be useful in his business as a Baker.
Any favor you can give him by way of letter that will enable him to pass the military lines will be bestowed on a Loyal honorable young man, & will greatly oblige
Yours Most Respectfully
Wm Rutledge Chaplain
