Chandlersville, Cass Co. Ill. Oct. 14th 1864,

To His Excellency,

Gov. R. Yates,

Springfield, Ill,

Dear Gov: During the last three weeks I have been on the stump in Brown, Schuyler and Cass Counties, and from close observation and the most reliable information I could get, I believe we can carry this (12th) Senatorial District if the Soldiers can be allowed to return home and vote. Last fall the Democratic majority in the five Counties composing this District was a fraction over eleven hundred. Since then about fifteen hundred soldiers have returned

home, but there have also a large number of Missouri refugees entered the District, who will neutralize, to some extent, the soldier's vote. The present draft is driving off many Copperheads, while our recent successes are drawing over to us many of the better portion of the opposition. With a little effort, and the return of our soldiers, we can carry Morgan and Menard Counties with respectable majorities, Cass with a small majority, (don't smile!) and greatly reduce the opposition majorities in Brown & Schuyler. Cass County is just now the best missionary field in which we have to work, and a vigorous effort would place it proudly on the side of loyalty.

Hon. Gov., can there

not be something done for the 12th Senatorial District? I am not so anxious on my own account, but I am enthusiastic in behalf of our glorious cause, and trust, as the result of our success, to see your Excellency go to Washington as our most eloquent champion in the Council of the nation.

I will be at the map meeting in Menard Co., on the 20th inst., where I hope to see you, and confer upon these subjects.

I am, Govr., your Excellency's most obedient servant,

G. P. Smith.

P.S. Col. Lippencott has assisted me in canvassing Cass County, and is doing great good.
