Military Provost Marshal General's Office
DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS
Cairo, Ill., October 16th 1864
His Excellency Governor Yates,
Springfield, Ills.
Governor,
Very recently C. W. Webster, of Salem, Marion County was appointed Agent of the Sanitary Commission at this Post. I know not who gave him the appointment, but this I do know, that Webster is, and always has been, an open and avowed Copperhead and Rebel Sympathizer, was a candidate for Sheriff of Marion County befor the Copperhead Convention this fall, and is known and regarded as a Copperhead & Rebel Sympathizer by all Union men in his own County. These being facts, I must earnestly ask Your Excellency to have this man Webster removed and a Patriot appointed in his place.
I am forever
Very Respectfully Your ob't ser't
