U. S. Consulate Altona March 23 1865 Hon Richd Yates U. S. Senator Washington Sir I omitted to say in my application to you for the Hamburg Consulate that should that office be already filled, please urge them to give me any other in Europe where I can be equally useful. The President knows me, see him and I know he will do it. I am one, last of three brothers, all naturalized citizens, two of whom are or have served their time in the U S Army and I [now?] am serving the country of my adoption by sending you all the men I can in the way of [emmegrants?] as the department knows my wife but I am starving here Senator my office does not realize me [500?] a year, a sum altogether to small to support my family. help me and wherever I am employed the country will be well served by a true man. I have the honor to be dear senator yours truly W. Marsh
