Dear Governor:

Your note of the 23rd inst. Came duly to hand. Truly the signs of the Times are very propitious. I look forward to the day when by the wise Counsels of our noblest Men in Congress And by the withering blows of our brave officers and men in the field, we shall be permitted to hail with glad shouts the returning war worn veterans bearing their no less worn and worthy battle flags.

This, will, indeed have been the real war for freedom. That for our national independence was achieved before.

As to being present at the Commencement of the Legislature, I Cannot say positively I will be there; for I am subject to orders.

But if Any Effort on my part Can Effect a visit so desirable to myself for the sake of what I May be Able to do for you, I will be there.

I think there is no need of further letters to Members of the Legislature from the North.

I saw when up there, Every man in My region, in whom there was the least doubt. And that disappeared before I left them.

Newcomer is still at Louisville Kentucky unless removed recently.

Some other matters I wish to speak of when I see you. Till then
