Nashville November 19th 1862
Friend Rutherford,
Being “Officer of the Day” and also being compelled to remain up all night, the idea struck me that I would write you a few lines.
We are cut off from outside communication. If you was ever “cut off” you can comprehend our situation, and condole with us. I assure you that the feeling is any thing but a pleasant one. For a man to be isolated may be all well enough, but the state of isolation when taken in conjunction with that of hunger is almost beyond human endurance. Hard crackers & old “Ned” (Bacon) are luxuries almost unthought of in our little army here. We are seriously thinking of converting our old boot legs into soup. But we hope for better times.
I heard through John Frierson of the death of his mother. I was not surprised to hear of it. She has had enough trials to kill her long ago poor woman. I recd a letter from Ad. to night from our model Sutler [Lom?] I am nearly crazy to see her. I thought perhaps I could through you get a transfer from my present position into the Dept. at Springfield. I resigned and they refused to accept it. I am unwilling
to tax the benevolence of my friends especially as you had already been so kind to me; but the present situation of things demands my presence nearer home. Any effort for me I assure you would (if I can ever be more your friend than I am) secure my eternal friendship and gratitude, valueless as it is. I have for 18 months served the country as as faithfully as under the circumstances I could. I have always been at my post for duty & think I am entitled from the Government to a small portion of its patronage. Please answer this Direct to Nashville via Cairo and put on the envelope “Follow the Regt.”
Truly Your Friend
