To
His Excellency, Governor Yates
and Hon O.M Hatch:
Messrs. Daniel & John McClain will acquaint you with the wishes of William B. McClain & William R. McClain, prisoners now at Camp Douglas.
We think it would be an act of cruelty on the part of the Government, to force them to return to the southern army, while they are anxious to take the oath of allegiance and cease fighting against the Government of their fathers.
We sincerely hope you will give them such assistance as may be in your power, to prevent their being exchanged and secure their liberation.
