His Excellency
Richard Yates
Governor of Illinois
Dear Sir
If it is not too late I would like to prefer a request for the appointment of Provost Marshall of this district. I suppose there are many applicants, but think that I have some claims as I have uniformly sustained the administration and the war for the suppression of the rebellion. I enlisted in the army - 18th Regt. Ills. Vols - in May 1861 - Retired from it in Dec. last from disability caused by a wound received in battle of Shiloh and a sprain incurred on a march.
In loyalty to the Government I yield to no one, and believe that I could perform the duties of the office. I can refer you to Marshall Phillips, with whom I have been some years acquainted.
Yours very Respectfully
