His Excellency Richard Yates
Gov. Illinois
Dear Gov.
Im as not very much disappointed, tho' intensely afflicted, in receiving, a few days since, the following order from the War Department. to wit.
"The Hospital for which he was appointed Chaplain, at Paducah Ky, having been broken up, Hospital Chaplain Francis A. McNeill, U. S. Army is, by the direction of the President hereby honorably discharged the service of the United States. By order of the secretary of war E W Townsend
Apt. Adj. General." &c
Now, I do not know how much my protracted absence at home, in the service of our state, in recruiting for the 100 day service, had in hinging this state of things about, or whether it had any thing to do with it. still I feel afflicted. my friends here are afflicted, & are uniting in a general & earnest petition to
The President to revoke his order and to appoint me in charge of the "Post Hospital" which has been established here, (as Chaplain since the U.S. Genl hospital, have been closed.
Will you do me the kindness to intimate to Mr Lincoln your views, feelings & wishes in the premises? I do not think, that after all I have labored, sacrificed, and suffered, in my own person, and those of my only two sons, in this cursed rebellion, I should be placed by the action of my government, that I would die to maintain, in circumstances which need to be explained to save me from the attacks of my political enemies and the Enemies of our Common Country
If, Gov, you can releive me at all, you will confer a very great favor on me who has always felt it a pleasure to sustain and support you.
I have the honor to be very
Respectfully Yr Obdt Sevt
Francis A. McNeill
