Benton Barracks August the 13th 1864
Dear Father
I once more take my pen to write to you my health is some better than when I last wrote but I am very weak yet but I think if I can keep clear of diarhea I will do tolerable well I hope this will find you all well and in good health. I want to get you to do me a favor if you please I think you can at least you can try and that is to See Govenor yates and have him Send an order to the commander of this post granting me permission to come home and Stay until I am exchanged---which he can do he has already ordered John Davis to be
furloughed and he will go home this evening we will have a chance to get furloughs after our discriptive rolls comes but for only fifteen days I don't want to come home until after I get my discriptive roll and am furd which will be after I am mustered that is the last of this month one thing you See I am on my paroll So being at home now is not being absent from duty [and?] for I have no duty to do and to lay here in these Barracks and eat Goverment rations is pretty hard and al most in Sight of home at that if I wanted to come home with out permission I could very easyly but I don't care about doing it their is now half of the paroled
prisoners at home and they are reported present and their rations are drawn here and sold and all they will have to do will be to be here and be mustered and obtain their pay by the time you get this Cleopas aught to be home and if he is I hope he will write me a letter I don't think I can come home be fore the tenth of Sept Soyou will have plenty of time and I hope you will have Success well I think I had as well close for the present and with my best wishes to you I re main as ever your affictionate Son until death

PS if you have heard from Will Torrance Since the fight on the 12th of July I would like to know for he was their and i dont know whether he
killed or not
