a [illegible] that I am with others about to be ronged be a tax to pay for volenteers for men that are to cowardly to enlist in defense of their Country, do beg leave to lay the truth before you for consideration five years ago I was made a widow and left with five sons four years ago this war commenced my two oldest sons enlisted one int he 17 Reg the first from Galesburg then 16 years old The other is in the [illegible] 7th leave Reg he fell a martyr to his Country one year ago in Memphis he was orderly for Col See and I now have three under 15 years none old enough to cary on a farm and is it right
for me to be taxed for this to stay at home that will [illegible] one of the best of governments I believe in leting the peace democrats go I am willing to do any thing for our boys in the field but I don't want to pay for any to stay at home I have furnished two and you may say three one that lived four years with us I think it is right for those that have done nothing for their Country to pay but it is hard to let my boys that were old enough to help to take care of the little Children and then pay for others my boys names Oscar Hanson [illegible] Rufus Hanson 7th Ills {illegible} he was discharged and enlisted the second time Yours respectfuly
