Sir
I have the honor herewith to enclose to you a letter from Dr Wm Woodward, Asst Surgeon 39th Ills. asking your influence in aid of his promotion, also in commendation of Dr Suckly Medical Director Army of the James to his Excellency Gov Oglesby.
The interest that you have ever taken in the well being of the gallant soldiers from the Loyal State of Illinois wherever they may have been serving during the present war has emboldened me to return to make a personal appeal
to you in behalf of Dr Woodman in hopes that he may speedily proceed in obtaining a well earned and deserved promotion
As an Illinoisan I feel a deep interest in those few troops from our beautiful Prairie State who have nobly supported her honor on many a bloody field in Virginia and this feeling must be my excuse for thus addressing yourself.
I am Sir
Your Obt Servant
A.F. Randall
