Cooperstown, Brown Co Ill Apr 6th/63
To his Excellency Gov Yates
Sir
I feal it to be my duty to give you all the information in my possession in regard to the movements of the "Cooperheads" in this vicinity. They seem to be determine at all hazard to resist the conscription act of Congress. when even it is attemped to inforce it. And for this purposs, they have held a meeting and formed themselves into a company, and elected officers. I cannot say who there officers is. but I know about all that signed the role. In this township (Cooperstown town-ship) they number about 80 or 90 old and young. all voters. and all proofessedly Democrats. but in reality sympathisers with the rebels. This all I kneed to say, as
you are aware of there movements.
But I must say that the lawal men of these parts are in no condition to contend with all these traiters. But few has any arms to defend themselves with. as for myself I have never owned as much as a pistle in my life. I must take occasion to say, as I am a stranger to you. that I had the honor of being a delegate from Brown to the convention at Springfield June 17th 1858.
Respectfully your obedient servent.
Jas. P. Mallory.
